                   he Cowan Ranch runs a privately owned commercial angus cow herd

along the Missouri River breaks south of Highmore, South Dakota.  This country has been in the Cowan family for generations, dating back to the early 1900s when Grandma Mary (Gregg) Cowan’s family homesteaded west of what is now Ft. Thompson, South Dakota.   It is country that has endured some of South Dakota’s most historical events, from the construction of the Oahe dam to the horrific interest rates of the early 1980s.         

        The ranch supports the privately owned commercial angus cow herd, along with select consignment pairs.  Yearly consignment numbers are dependent upon moisture and feed conditions.   The ranch has been actively involved with the age and source, drug free, and NHTC (non-hormone treated calves) programs since 2006.  Calves are weaned in the fall and go directly into the feedlot background schedule.
